Texas Salvation Army Providing Shelter, Meals and Emotional and Spiritual Care

Dallas, Texas (May 24, 2015) – The Salvation Army is providing shelter, meals, and emotional and spiritual care to those affected by severe flooding in several Texas cities. Sunday saw increased response following more overnight rain.

Ongoing Salvation Army response efforts include:

• Wichita Falls – Mobile kitchens and staff from Wichita Falls, Big Spring, San Angelo, DFW Area Command, and Midland provided 1,089 meals, 2,137 drinks, and 148 snacks on 5/23/15.

• Wichita Falls - The Salvation Army Shelter (403 7th St., Wichita Falls, TX 76301) provided overnight accommodation to 39 people on 5/22/15 and 41 people on 5/23/15

• Corpus Christi – The mobile kitchen is located at Banquete Jr. High School – 4339 S. 4th Street, Robstown, TX 78339.

• Montgomery County - The Houston Area Command mobile kitchen is assisting at the American Red Cross Shelter (Lone Star Community Center, 2500 Lone Star Parkway, Montgomery, TX 77356) by providing meals beginning 5/24/15. Salvation Army mobile kitchens from the Pasadena and Northwest Corps remain on standby

• San Marcos - The Austin Area Command mobile kitchen working with the San Marcos Service Center will be providing meals in San Marcos (San Marcos Activity Center, 501 E. Hopkins St.) beginning 5/24/15.

• Van Zandt and Smith Counties – The Tyler Corps is continuing to support survivors following severe weather events.

“With heavy rain expected today and tomorrow, we are ready to support emergency relief efforts any way we can,” said Major Chris Flanagan, Area Commander for The Salvation Army of Greater Houston. “The Salvation Army is here to help those most in need in our community.”

All Salvation Army units in the Texas Division are on standby at this time while Service Extension Regions 1-4 (East Texas/ North East Texas/ Central West Texas rural communities) are continuing to assess the potential needs in their areas. The Salvation Army is monitoring developments in the State Operations Center and is coordinating with other nonprofit organizations and state agencies.
