The Salvation Army of St. Marys, GA Assisting After Tropical Storm Debby

St. Marys, GA (July 1, 2012) – With temperatures of 113 and high water levels in surrounding communities, Camden County Emergency Management requested the assistance from The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services.

Under the leadership of Charlene Sears, The Salvation Army St. Marys Service Center Director, pulled her team of volunteers to provide public safety officials with lunch and dinner as flooding from the remnents of Tropical Storm Debby encroached on the Browntown Community of Camden County.

St. Marys Director Charlene Sears stated, “We prepared meals from a small kitchen in the Browntown Fire Station which is central to the affected areas.  This is a remote location with boat and vehicle food delivery obstacles but we managed to get everyone fed and hydrated and in a orderly and timely fashion.”

The call for assistance came at 8:30 and initial conversations indicated that lunch would be needed and possibly supper.  With a well trained group of volunteers, including Master Chef and Advisory Board Member Patsey Schreiber, over 31 individuals were provided lunch that included sandwiches and drinks.  Supper was served to over 50 Public Saftey personnel that included spaghetti, green beans and rolls as well as water.  “We will assess the needs for breakfast on July 2nd and are not sure how long the Camden Emergency Management will need our assistance in the coming days” said Sears.

At this point, in-kind donations are not being accepted.  However, used clothing and furniture are gifts that are vital in supporting the day-to-day work of The Salvation Army.  Please consider contributing these items to continue to meet the needs of those who need us 365 days each year at The Salvation Army Family Store at 1909 Osborne Road, St. Marys, Georgia or call (912) 882-2200.
