Southern Indiana (March 10, 2012) - One week after an F4 tornado ripped through several communities in Southern Indiana, the response has shifted from relief to recovery, clean-up, temporary housing and schools. Many organizations and companies have sent teams to aid in this process, which some predict will last from 12-24 months. Major John Turner, The Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army Indiana, visited the Army's operations in Henryville today. Major Turner spoke with survivors and offered his encouragement to the staff and volunteers who have worked many hours since the tornado destroyed the area on March 2.
The Salvation Army, with reinforcement from around the state, will have a presence in these tornado-stricken areas for the long haul. It was announced today that The Lilly Foundation is generously supporting the Army's tornado relief work in Southern Indiana with $100,000 and an additional $30,000 towards a much-needed early emergency response vehicle.
Residents affected by the tornadoes in Henryville, Marysville, Pekin-Borden, Otisco and Nabb can now begin applying for short-term financial assistance from The Salvation Army. The Army offers this service with the intention of meeting immediate needs, such as: replacing food lost in refrigerators, freezers, clothing and household items. Specific days, times and requirements are listed below.
